Emphasizing Plant Health in India

New Delhi, Aug 22: Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the government, has pointed out that while the One Health Mission has primarily focused on human, animal, and wildlife health, it is crucial to also prioritize plant health.

During the 28th meeting of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC), which aimed to discuss the National Plant Health Initiative (NPHI), Professor Sood stressed the urgent need for a dedicated Plant Health Initiative. He noted that given India's significant dependence on agriculture, this issue is particularly pertinent.

Professor Sood mentioned that the current ecosystem presents a unique opportunity to propel this initiative forward. With substantial investments in institutional capacity building, particularly through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), alongside advancements in technology and India's achievements in digital public infrastructure, there is a robust foundation for progress in this area.

Dr. VK Saraswat, a member of NITI Aayog, highlighted the importance of the Plant Health Initiative, stating that agricultural losses adversely impact farmers' incomes and overall productivity.

He pointed out the increasing challenges posed by climate change and various threats to plant health, emphasizing the necessity for proactive measures and effective strategies for mitigation.

Dr. Saraswat also called for enhanced research and innovation, particularly focusing on integrating platforms that support a comprehensive approach, including strong data integration and analytical capabilities.

Dr. Ramesh Chand, another member of NITI Aayog, remarked that the "One Health" concept is incomplete without addressing the health of plants alongside livestock.

He stressed the importance of utilizing natural resources efficiently to foster sustainable agriculture. Additionally, he noted that preventive strategies, such as ensuring high seed quality and implementing clean plant programs, are effective in promoting plant health without negative side effects.
